必見！Howells のアクション解説！

Howells 7 1/2' #5 3 1/8oz. #5216

誤解や曲解している人が多いのですが、本来はこういう物だけを、New とかMint って言うんですよ(笑)

Howells の 7 1/2' の竿はの３種類がカタログモデルとして存在します。柔らかい方から順に、3oz. #4、3 1/8oz. #5、3 1/4oz. #5、ですね。

この３種類のロッド、偶然手に入れた、3 1/4oz.の竿があまりにも良かったので、他の７’６"はどんなアクションで、それらはどのように違うのだろうという興味本位から好奇心が抑えきれず、ここ１年の間に無理を重ね、偶然をも味方にして、３本とも手に入れてしまいました。

で、新たな疑問が！

以前のブログで、Howellsのガイドラッピングが、ダブルからシングルに替わったのは、シリアル５４XXの年、Howells５４歳、つまり１９８７年であること、それとともにロッドサックがWinstonカラーの鮮やかな赤から、エンジっぽい濃い赤に変わったと書きました。
それならば、この＃５２１６は鮮やかな赤のロッドサックに入っている筈なんですが、実際はエンジ色のサックに入っていました。
う～ん・・・、ですね。

＃４と＃５で色の使い分けをしてたとも考えづらいですし・・・。

２本はすごく良いコンディションとはいえ使用済だったのでちゃんと使えましたが、問題のこの最後の一本、こいつはまったくの未使用なんです。
Howellsの工房を出たまま、グリップをカバーしたビニールを留めたドラフティングテープの上には、Howellsがボールペンで書いた品番とシリアルナンバーを記した文字が残っているんですね。

使うために買ったのですが、まだそのままラインを通さずに置いてあります。
もちろん、繋いで振ってはみましたよ。

当たり前のことなのですが、明らかにアクションに差はあります。
軽い方が、スッとベンドがバットに入ってくるアクションです。

Each Howells rod has its own personality. A rod that suits one person may not suit another. All his rods cast and fish very well. He made a large number of rods in different line sizes and lengths. He also made modifications to individual rods at the request of a particular customer. Many good rodmakers like Jim Payne would customize a particular model at a customer's request. Thus, a 7'6" 3 1/8 oz. #5 for one customer may be slightly different from some other 7'6" 3 1/8 oz. #5 rod.

 

In general, the 7'6" 3 1/8 oz. #5 Howells would be more supple than your 7'6" 3 1/4 oz. #5. It would be easier to make mends and curve casts. It might have a little less power in the butt. When Gary Howells [or Bob Bolt] offers 2 different models for the same length and line size, the lighter weight for the line size will be more supple, or bend more throughout its length. The heavier model would be a little stronger in the butt.

 

Gary Howells, like many good rodmakers, made subtle changes in his models over time. I like some of his models more than others. People prefer different actions. I don't know that there is any time in Gary's career that he made his best rods. When customers started to fish more weighted nymphs in the late 1980's, Gary made some changes in his taper in some models. A more powerful butt would toss a weighted nymph better, but would lose some finess for fine dry fly fishing or presentations.
